Stay Cool When the Temperature Rises

With the summer temps fast approaching, it’s time to make sure your vehicle’s air conditioning system is ready to keep things cool as the heat of summer driving approaches. There are several items that every vehicle owner can check out on their own, while other jobs should probably be left to a trained professional technician.
The first and easiest task is to just check the function of the system by turning it on. Unless you drive a hybrid with an electrically-driven air conditioning system, the air conditioning (A/C) compressor is almost always driven by a belt turned by the engine.  That means you need to start the engine for the air conditioner to provide any chilled air.
With the engine running, turn on the air conditioning and verify that cold air is coming from the vents. Cycle the fan control to ensure that the amount of chilled air can be varied. If you can feel cool air but it isn’t blowing, you may have a faulty ventilation fan or it may simply be a blown fuse. Check the owner’s manual to find out which fuse controls the fan and replace it if necessary. If the fuse is good but the fan still doesn’t work, it’s probably best to bring the vehicle into your dealership and have a technician check it out.
If the fan is pushing out air that is not quickly cold, shut off the engine and take a look under the hood to inspect the accessory drive-belts on the engine. For safety reasons, it’s really important not stick your fingers or any other object near the belts with the engine running. On a rear-wheel drive car or truck, the accessory belt, along with the A/C compressor, will be found at the front of the engine. On most front-wheel drive vehicles in which the engine is mounted sideways, the “front” of the engine is usually found on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Inspect the belt or belts with the engine off to ensure they aren’t loose, frayed or broken. Most newer vehicles will have a single belt that wraps around several pulleys, including the alternator, air conditioning compressor and possibly a hydraulic power steering pump, while older vehicles may have two to three belts. If you push on the belt mid-way between two of the pulleys, there should be less than half an inch of slack on the belt. A frayed belt shouldn’t cause A/C failure, but it should be replaced, so it doesn’t break while you are driving.
As the engine packaging on newer vehicles gets increasingly tight, belt replacement has become more difficult. If a belt needs replacing, you should take your vehicle to your dealer and have a trained technician take care of it.
If the belt(s) is in good shape, the most likely sources of air conditioning problems are the compressor or low levels of refrigerant. Over time, refrigerant can slowly leak out of the air conditioning system and require a recharge. Vehicles built before the mid-1990s all originally used a form of refrigerant known as R-12. Because R-12 caused damage to the Earth’s ozone layer, it was banned from use and replaced with R-134.
Older vehicles originally built for R-12 can be upgraded to run with R-134, and over the years many have already been modified. This is not a do-it-yourself sort of project and if you still have an older vehicle that uses R-12, the upgrade should be handled by a pro.
Drivers shouldn’t try to recharge their vehicles on their own and can get this service done by their dealership. A factory-trained technician should inspect your A/C system for leaks and other problems before your system is recharged, anyway, to avoid wasting refrigerant and money.
If the problem is with the air conditioning compressor or a leak somewhere in the system, let the professionals at Coulter Motor Company help you.  Taking apart the system and putting it back together without damaging seals is a not a trivial task, and if you don’t get it right it can be far more expensive to fix than if a technician did it in the first place.
Now is the time to check out your air conditioning and have it serviced before you get stuck in a traffic jam on a 90-degree day. It costs nothing to do the basic checks, and getting service now will prevent grief later.

The CTS Family…Something for Everyone

Nearly 10 years ago, the Cadillac CTS brought the brand back into the conversation of the world’s best luxury sedans for a new age of driver. Since then, the CTS has continued to impress both critics and customers alike, and the CTS line, now on sale here at Coulter Motor Company in Tempe, Arizona, has grown to include multiple iterations of the popular formula that has made it so successful.
The rear-wheel drive 2013 Cadillac CTS family includes Sport Sedan (MSRP $39,095) Sport Wagon (MSRP $39,205) and Coupe (MSRP $38,905) body styles. For those buyers who want total roadway dominance, the CTS-V Sedan, Wagon and Coupe (MSRP $64,515 for each) are also available. All models come standard with StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System and the security of OnStar with Automatic Crash Response, Hands-Free Calling and Vehicle Diagnostics. Cadillac drivers enjoy a six-year/70,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty with Roadside Assistance, as well as Cadillac Premium Care Maintenance that covers all oil changes, tire rotations and multi point vehicle inspections for four years/50,000 miles.
CTS Sport SedanThe CTS that started it all is available in Luxury, Performance and Premium trims. All models come standard with a 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 hp and 223 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission and returns up to 27 mpg on the highway. A 3.6-liter V6 good for 318 hp and 275 lb/ft of torque is also available, as is all-wheel drive and a choice of sport and performance suspensions. Leather seating is standard and available upscale amenities include heated and ventilated front seats, a 10-speaker, Bose surround-sound audio system and a heated steering wheel.
CTS Sport Wagon: Unique in the segment, the CTS Sport Wagon offers the same powertrain choices as its four-door sibling and adds a cargo capacity of up to 58 cubic feet, an available programmable power liftgate, and large LED taillamps. Options include Sapele wood trim, microfiber suede seat inserts and a panoramic rear sunroof.
CTS CoupeAlmost identical to the concept vehicle that inspired it, the four-passenger Coupe shares the same wheelbase as the Sport Sedan, with overall dimensions that are lower and shorter for a more menacing look. The Coupe further distinguishes itself from the Sport Sedan with a touch-pad for the doors (replacing conventional handles), a sculpted fascia, a rear spoiler and exhaust outlets in the center of the rear fascia. All Coupe models come standard with the larger, 3.6-liter V6 and feature a sport suspension. Keyless access, Bluetooth, Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist and heated exterior mirrors are all standard.
As the first street-legal production car to break the eight-minute mark at the vaunted Nürburgring track in Germany, the CTS-V features the cutting edge design that makes the CTS so popular and adds in its own unique styling cues, including a mesh front grille, aggressive front fascia and raised hood. Performance is provided by a tire-scorching, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that cranks out 556 hp and 551 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. The CTS-V features the world’s fastest suspension technology in its Magnetic Ride Control and has Brembo brakes at all four corners. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires specially engineered for the CTS-V ensure maximum grip and performance. Inside, Recaro performance driving seats with 14-way adjustments, Bose surround-sound and ambient lighting are all standard. The CTS-V Coupe and CTS-V Sport Wagon add the same versatility and style elements as their non-V siblings, with the heart-stopping performance of the supercharged V8.
There is no wrong model to choose. Stop by today to learn more and see which is right for you.

GMC Owner Tools and Apps…Refining Customer Experience

Owning a new car can be a great experience. GMC is redefining the ownership experience with new tools and high-tech apps for its owners.
One of the most effective tools is the GMC Online Owner’s Center. The “Manage My GMC” owner center is a one-stop shop for everyone who drives a GMC vehicle. Here you can view your owner’s manual; keep track of OnStar, SiriusXM Satellite Radio and GM Card accounts; see guides and watch how-to videos. There is a full Service History section where you can keep track of your dealer service records and add and edit details yourself if you like to do your own maintenance. A full maintenance schedule is also available at the site. Even when you need to do something as simple as call your local dealer, this online portal can help as it keeps record of your preferred dealer’s information. The site also keeps track of all your relevant warranty information, as well as any data related to open recalls for your vehicles. If for some reason you can’t find exactly what you need, there is a Live Chat representative standing by to help out.
Thanks to the latest advancements in mobile technology, access to information on-the-go is easier than ever. With the MyGMC mobile app, available for iPhone and Android, all the information you need is at the tip of your finger. The app allows you to pinpoint your location with GPS and call for roadside assistance, and it can also help you find the closest dealer. Other features include service schedule and owner’s manual data just like what’s on the website. Two of the most useful features of the MyGMC app are the Lights & Indicators menu and the Parking Reminder. Lights & Indicators pulls up a full list of all the warning lights for your specific vehicle and provides an explanation for each. The Parking Reminder uses GPS to mark where you parked and can recall that location later so you can quickly and easily return to the spot.
Another great tool for GMC owners is the OnStar RemoteLink app. This is easily one of the most advanced automotive mobile apps available today. RemoteLink allows you to check the status of your vehicle from anywhere in the world. It uses the capability of the OnStar system to send data about the vehicle – such as fuel range, security status, mileage and maintenance notices – to the smartphone app. You can also use the application to access functions such as door locks and even remote start. Of course, the app also gives you remote access to many other OnStar features, such as OnStar Assist.
To make your experience as a GMC owner even more convenient and enjoyable,  the main GMC website has been completely optimized for mobile viewing. You can research, explore, see current offers and more without having to hassle with navigating the full webpage on your phone. The blast set the Humvee ablaze, and even though he was seriously wounded, Sergeant Bordelon remained in the vehicle to assist those aboard in getting to safety. He was the last to leave and suffered multiple internal injuries along with 3rd degree burns over much of his body. Once he was stabilized, he was flown to Brooke Army Medical Hospital in San Antonio, Tx, where he past away from his wounds on May 10, 2005. Sergeant Bordelon was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery and received many awards including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Mila and her 2 children have carried on his legacy since then and all 3 are recipients of immediate and future use scholarships from the Folds of Honor Foundation. (see attached story)

This is what our event is all about. We are raising funds to assist those that could use the help to carry on with their lives by furthering their education. All of the money we raise at our event will stay in Arizona to help the families that have sacrificed so much. So again, I encourage you all to come out and help us raise some money and to honor the men and women of our military that have given so much so that we are able to live under the very Freedom they fight so hard to preserve. You are not able to make it to our event, you can still help out by going to our website, www.foldsofhonorgolfaz.com. Click on the Sponsorship tab and then click on the donation button to submit an amount you would like to donate. The Folds of Honor Foundation is a national 501 (c)(3) charitable organization and all donations are tax deductible. Click here to register now!

There are so many people that have helped us each and every year and we can not thank you enough. Last year we were the largest fundraiser in Arizona for the Folds of Honor Foundation and we hope to continue the growth needed to stay on top. With your help and generosity we can make that happen. We are also looking for volunteers to help us on tournament day. If you are interested in helping please contact Lindsey Yates at lins77@cox.net or  by phone at 602-531-4447.

The Terrain Denali (MSRP $34,926) is powered by a choice of potent and fuel-efficient engines, with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. The standard engine is an Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp, 172 lb/ft of torque and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg highway. Also available is a 3.6-liter V6. Both engines feature direct injection and Continuously Variable Valve Timing. The V6 produces 301 hp and 272 lb/ft of torque, improvements of 14 and 22 percent, respectively, over last year’s 3.0-liter V6. Even with this increase in power and performance, the Terrain Denali V6 maintains the same 24 mpg highway fuel economy rating. All models come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, and towing capability is rated at up to 3,500 pounds.
You’ll recognize the Terrain Denali by its large chrome grille, body-color fascias and rocker moldings, satin-chrome accents and chrome exhaust finishers. Add 63.9 cubic feet of cargo volume and the Terrain is as versatile as it is luxurious.
Ride and handling has been improved thanks to exclusive new dual-flow dampers. This advanced suspension technology provides a smoother ride and greater control by controlling the suspension dampening across a greater range of driving conditions. Other advanced technologies in the Terrain Denali include a Color Touch Radio system with IntelliLink. The customizable IntelliLink system comes standard and allows users to connect via Bluetooth® and control streaming radio apps like Pandora®. It also features Gracenote® music database technology. A power liftgate is standard, making access to the rear cargo area simple and convenient. A Color Touch Navigation unit and a Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System are also available.
To protect your most precious cargo, the Terrain Denali is equipped with all the latest safety features, including an all-new, premium standard safety package with Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Park Assist. Forward Collision Alert uses the industry’s first single-camera crash avoidance system to monitor and warn drivers of impending collisions. Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert both use radar sensors to help drivers avoid vehicles they may not be able to see. The available all-wheel drive provides enhanced handling and improved traction in all conditions. Standard in every GMC vehicle, OnStar includes Automatic Crash Response – which will automatically alert emergency personnel in the event of a crash, even if you can’t speak – plus many more safety and convenience features.

Sexy and Sophisticated…The Cadillac ELR Brings a New Light to Hybrids

Cadillac ELRThe Cadillac ELR unveiled at the North American International Auto Show is the most compelling car to roll out of Caddy in a generation.

The Chevrolet Volt, on which the ELR is based, is a perfectly fine car. It’s an attractive, eye-catching design partnered with an advanced powertrain that negates range anxiety even as it offers close to 40 miles of all-electric motivation. But the ELR, which is the production version of the Cadillac Converj concept is a different beast entirely. It brings sexy sophistication and a dash of luxury to the extended-range EV segment.

To begin with, it’s a svelte two-door that makes the CTS Coupe — one of our favorite modern Caddy designs — look bloated and overwrought. The front takes all the right cues of nearly a decade ago, but wraps them around a body that’s sporting a 0.305 coefficient of drag – about the same as Prius, without the look of a suppository. It’s even better out back, where the wedge shape forms a pointed hatch accentuated by taillights that wrap up and over the rear fenders, nearly touching the chrome window accents. And every single light — inside and out — is an LED, with the turn indicator on the driver’s side mirror providing a visual readout of the ELR’s battery level when plugged in.

That powertrain is a tweaked version of what you’ll find in the Volt, with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine feeding power to a lightened, T-shaped 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that spans the center of the coupe. Nail the throttle and you’ll send 207 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque (the same as a BMW M3) to the 20-inch front wheels. Cadillac isn’t citing performance numbers, but the 4,070-pound ELR should be good for mid-seven second run to 60 mph. And judging by the collective enthusiasm of engineers we spoke with, the driving experience should be far more engaging than the Volt’s, including paddle shifters on the steering wheel that up the regenerative braking force to mimic the feel of a downshift.

But forget about performance and exterior flourishes for the moment. The ELR is an extended-range EV, meaning it’s good for an all-electric range of 35 miles (the Volt comes in at 37), before the gasoline generator kicks in to feeding juice to the battery pack and power the electric motor. Cadillac even worked with the American Federation of the Blind to equip the ELR with a driver-activated tone that alerts pedestrians at intersections. Total charge time on a 240-volt outlet is around 4.5 hours, while the 110-volt outlet next to your toaster will get the ELR’s batteries recharged in around 12 hours.

The interior is a further evolution of Caddy’s new focus on driver involvement and advanced infotainment, with the CUE system in the center stack, a configurable instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and tasteful combination of leather, aluminum and hand-stitching that provide some warmth to balance out the angular exterior. The only puzzling bit is what Cadillac is calling a “power-assisted” cup-holder cover, providing an answer to a question that no one in history has ever asked.

Regardless, sales of the ELR are set to begin early next year, and while pricing has yet to be announced, we’re told production will be limited — which suggests a price tag well north of $50,000 isn’t out the question.

GM Unveils the All New Cadillac ELR

Cadillac ELRThe Chevrolet Volt’s legacy has added a new dimension, the Cadillac ELR.

The car rolled onto the stage at the North American International Auto Show.

Bob Ferguson, GM’s new vice president for global Cadillac, said the vehicle would be “manufactured in a limited number” and exported “only to the largest global markets, including China and Europe.”

“I believe it’s a landmark in Cadillac’s history,” Ferguson said in his first appearance on stage at a major global auto show. “It sits at the intersection of beautify and design and the best of engineered. It’s a special car that exemplifies Cadillac’s greatest achievements through history.”

Mark Adams, executive director of Cadillac global design, said the vehicle would stand out from pure electric vehicles because the car’s gasoline engine will provide assurance to drivers who would otherwise be worried about running out of electricity.

He also said the vehicle provides a framework for Cadillac’s future interior design.

“In its simplest terms, the Cadillac ELR  is art and science personified,” Adams said.

Unlike Tesla’s pure-electric Model S sedan, the ELR has a gasoline engine that backs up its battery. The vehicle can travel 35 miles on a single charge of electricity before a 1.4-liter engine comes to life and keeps the coupe running.

ELR InteriorThe interior of the ELR is a destination unto itself. An open door reveals an exquisite oasis of elegance and information. Finely stitched leather accents, burled-grained wood and available carbon fiber, along with the technology of Cadillac CUE2, provide touches that may even exceed the comforts of home.

Resting on 20″ wheels, the emotionally charged sculpture is punctuated at every corner with striking LED lights that are as exquisitely etched as any jewel. Up front, a progressive take on the iconic Cadillac grille features a flush design to maximize efficiency. Even the door handles are hidden to give the wind little to hold on to.

The technological centerpiece of ELR is an advanced electric drive propulsion system that features an onboard, range-extending, gas-powered generator. It provides instant torque and the smooth, shiftless acceleration of electric drive, while keeping gas power on reserve for longer journeys. In addition, dual-side paddle controls provide regeneration on demand, putting energy back into your battery while slowing you down.

The Cadillac ELR will be arriving Winter 2013.  Pre-order yours today at Coulter Tempe.

Cadillac XTS – A Force to be Reckoned With

The 2013 XTS is the largest sedan in Cadillac’s lineup but it handles as smoothly as a smaller car.Cadillac XTS

The largest sedan in Cadillac’s lineup, the 2013 XTS, handles with the poise and competence of a smaller car and with a smoothness not typically found in high-end, sporty sedans.

The modern, top-notch interior design of the car – complete with front seats that can have some of the biggest thigh support extenders in the business – is the best to come from Cadillac in years.

Cadillac CueStill, it takes practice to use the new Cue information display with touchscreen. Even reaching over to pick up something on the floor can cause the radio to change channels because the driver’s hair accidentally brushes a display screen.

The XTS exterior is pleasing, as years of Cadillac’s sharp-edge styling is smoothed for more graceful lines.

The car earned five out of five stars in government frontal, side and overall crash test ratings.

This rating didn’t take into account the fact the sedan is first with a safety alert seat that vibrates the driver’s bottom if the system senses the car may be backing into an obstacle or moving into an adjacent lane that’s already occupied.

The new-for-2013, five-passenger XTS has a starting retail price of $44,995 with front-wheel drive and $51,835 with all-wheel drive. All models come with a 304-horsepower, direct-injection V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.

At nearly 17 feet long, the XTS is about the same length as a Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle. It is longer than Cadillac’s other sedans. It’s 10 inches longer than a 2013 CTS sedan and about 19 inches longer than the ATS sedan.

The back seat is roomy, with a full 40 inches of legroom.

Cadillac XTS But the front seats offer even more legroom – a full 45.8 inches. Seat travel fore and aft is long enough to accommodate lanky fellows, and thanks to a steering wheel that telescopes as well as tilts up and down, anyone can settle into the driver’s seat nicely.

The seats were eminently supportive for long drives in the test car but didn’t feel hard or overly firm. Front seats also had fans for keeping bodies cool. All versions have leather-trimmed seats

Fitted with Magnetic Ride Control suspension, this sedan responds to a driver’s inputs and handles with poise and grace without sending road bumps through to passengers harshly.

Some auto enthusiasts, accustomed to V-8 power, quibble whether a 3.6-liter, double overhead cam V-6 is enough for the XTS. But the test XTS performed so well on city streets and highways, with power coming on so smoothly, transmission shifts weren’t noticed. Neither was the lack of a V-8.

Torque doesn’t peak to 264 foot-pounds until 5,200 rpm, so low-end power isn’t like a sports car.

But the direct gasoline injection of the engine gave the test XTS a lot of energy, and 0-to-60 miles per hour is estimated at a decent 6.5 seconds.

The 4,215-pound, all-wheel drive XTS is rated by the federal government at 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while a front-wheel drive XTS is rated at 17/28 mpg.

A nice perk for the XTS owner: The car uses regular unleaded, not the more pricey premium gasoline that many luxury cars require.

The Cadillac XTS definitely is a force to be reckoned with!
